"did you eat?" is a song and music video I created for my Senior Project in my last year at New York University as an Integrated Design and Media. I created this song as a letter of appreciation to my parents who I feel like I don't show enough
Coming up with the chords, lyrics, theme, and tone were the first steps. After I created the song, I story boarded exactly what scenes I wanted in the music video. Then I asked my friend to mix the song, I filmed the shots, and edited it all together.
I had sketched out exactly what shots I wanted. In the story, I am a student who is new to his school and enjoys college life by moving into his dorm, exploring the city, hanging out with friends, and, of course, studying. He then finds pictures of him and his parents from 20+ years ago. He reminisces and realizes that he needs to call his parents (which is what happens at the very beginning).
The filming was spread apart 2 months. I had to go back and forth between Philly and New York to film a documentary for another school project and for this project so that I could get the shots of Rittenhouse Square and Penn's Landing (the locations of where the pictures were taken). After all the shots were filmed, I decided I wanted the music video to have a somber nostalgic feel to it. To achieve this, I used a film overlay with film burns, noise, and halation to make the whites pop out and glow. Overall, I was really happy with the tone of the video and hope it makes people cry.
